  • 500 g (1.1 lb) Ground Beef (Halal)
  • 15 ml (1 tbsp) Vegetable Oil
  • 1 Medium Onion, Diced
  • 2 Cloves Garlic, Minced (for gravy)
  • 5 ml (1 tsp) Smoked Paprika
  • 2.5 ml (0.5 tsp) Chipotle Powder
  • 30 ml (2 tbsp) Tomato Paste
  • 250 ml (1 cup) Beef or Vegetable Broth
  • 15 ml (1 tbsp) Soy Sauce
  • 5 ml (1 tsp) Molasses
  • 15 ml (1 tbsp) Butter (for gravy)
  • 1 kg (2.2 lb) Potatoes, Cubed
  • 60 g (4 tbsp) Unsalted Butter
  • 120 ml (0.5 cup) Whole Milk
  • 2 Cloves Garlic, Roasted and Mashed (for mash)
  • 30 ml (2 tbsp) Chopped Chives
  • 1 Red Bell Pepper
  • 5 ml (1 tsp) Olive Oil
  • Salt and Pepper to taste

Instructions

  1. Roast Red Pepper: Roast pepper at 220°C (425°F) for 20-25 minutes, steam, peel, seed, and blend with olive oil and salt.
  2. Boil Potatoes: Boil cubed potatoes in salted water for 12-15 minutes until tender, then drain.
  3. Sauté Aromatics: Sauté diced onion in oil until translucent, then add minced garlic and cook until fragrant.
  4. Brown Beef: Brown ground beef, breaking it up, and season with smoked paprika, chipotle powder, salt, and pepper.
  5. Build Gravy: Stir in tomato paste, then add broth, soy sauce, and molasses; simmer until thickened.
  6. Finish Gravy: Fold in red pepper puree, whisk in butter, and keep warm.
  7. Mash Potatoes: Mash potatoes with butter, milk, roasted garlic, and chives; season with salt and pepper.
  8. Plate and Garnish: Serve gravy over mashed potatoes, drizzle with remaining puree, and garnish with chives.

Notes

For extra creamy mashed potatoes, use a potato ricer or food mill. Roasting the garlic mellows its flavor.
